Wordless Wednesday: Hummingbirds!

We have a hummingbird feeder by our gate, and it’s one busy place! About a month ago, we heard the first hummingbird returning after his winter away; he suddenly appeared on the branch where we had hung the feeder the summer before…he seemed to be thinking, “I know I left that food right here!”

This afternoon, John had the camera with him and was close to the feeder when the hummingbirds came by. He caught some photos but stand by for more, hopefully. We have a telephoto lens and hope to get some closeup shots but, for today, we had the short lens when this little acrobat came by…

I plant flowers every year in my butterfly and Hummingbird garden Should I also put out a hummingbird feeder?

I’ll bet if you put out a feeder, you’d see even more hummingbirds!! If you get one with red on the feeder itself, you won’t have to add any food coloring to the sugar water. (I make my own sugar water by just boiling the sugar in water; I make enough to change out the feeder a couple of times and keep the extra refrigerated.) The only downside is that you’ll need to change out the feeder and wash it. When it gets hot, the water will spoil before the hummingbirds can finish it. I usually just fill our feeders halfway once it gets hot. They just love the feeder and they’re there all day!

Thank you for all the information. I am going out this week to buy a feeder.
