Barbados

This island has been welcoming tourists since the days before the American Revolution. George Washington came to enjoy the healthful climate (much needed by his tuberculosis-stricken brother, Lawrence) back in 1751, and visitors have been coming to this island in the far eastern Caribbean ever since.

Barbados combines tropical casualness with British formality, where high tea on a hot afternoon makes perfect sense. Some must-see sights include Harrison's Cave, where damp rooms reveal their hidden formations, waterfalls, and pool; the Animal Flower Cave, a sea cave named for the sea anemones found in its pools; the 1650 St. Nicholas Abbey, one of only three houses of Jacobean architecture that remain standing in the Western Hemisphere; and Sam Lord's Castle, built in 1820 and rich with tales of piracy.
